Therefore, If you are planning to visit Japan, I, living in Japan, strongly recommend to avoid those famous cities. Instead of those busy cities, you can visit local areas close to famous cities, and you can save your money for accomodation. Moreover, you can feel real Japanese cities or culture without many tourists.

Mie
I could say that Mie is absolutely hidden tourist spot in Japan, it is located in the middle of Japan. It is close to Nagoya, but Osaka and Kyoto are also close to Mie, which means you can go to some famous cities during the stay in Mie with cheap accommodations.
Mie is the place where G7 Ise-shima Summit was held in 2016. Mie is also famous for Ise shrine, Ninnja, Matsusaka ushi (one of the most delicious beef). You can visit some famous tourist spots in Mie, but the main reason I recommend is its location, which is between Osaka and Nagoya, also Kyoto, Nara.
If you hope cheaper travel, Mie is amazing place. Of course, you have to take trains to go to Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya, Nara. However, as for Nagoya, you can also take ferries.
Location
Mie is known as the middle of Japan as I stated, thus it is easy to visit some cities across Japan.
When you are planning to visit Mie, the closest airport would be Chuubu airport and Kansai Kokusai airport. From there, you have to take trains or ferries.

Mie is famous for Ise, which is one of cities in Mie. In 2016, Iseshima summit was held in Ise.
